I’m launching a large-scale street art project called Night of 1,000 Fridas, and I’d like you to sign up and take part!
Together, I hope we can place 1,000 depictions of Frida Kahlo in public spaces. You can take part from anywhere and your contribution can be visual art, a performance, or maybe something I haven’t thought of yet. Just place your art out in public, or perform it in public, on January 25, 2019 and incorporate the hashtag “#1KFridas.” Participants who place art in Washington, D.C. are eligible for $600 in prize money.
So far, pledged contributors include award winning artists and musicians, kids, former professional athletes, an Olympian, and a mayor. You can read about some of our contributors here.
I want contributing to be easy! Watch this video:

Night of 1,000 Fridas is an ambitious project and requires a network much larger than what I have on my own. I need you to help create and recruit! Please commit to creating some Fridas by filling out this form, then share widely and often. Over and over. Until January 25, 2019.
Also, please connect on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and use the hashtag #1KFridas to follow the progress of the project.
Why Night of 1,000 Fridas?
- Frida was an amazing artist who led an inspiring life.
- To encourage everyone of all ages and abilities to create art.
- To bring art into public spaces.
- To create community.
- To see if we can.
- 1,000 public images of a bisexual Latina communist revolutionary could do the world some good right now.
My own admiration of Frida Kahlo led me to read and write about her for several years. In 2019, Run Amok Books will publish my book of short stories Frida Sex Dreams and Other Unnerving Disruptions. I wrote about the title story in this book for The North American Review, and if you want to know more about my fascination with Frida, this might help.
In 2017, I enlisted friends and family to help me create #100DucksDC and we made 100 illuminated ducks out of packing tape. The energy and camaraderie created by that event far exceeded anything I have been able to achieve through solo projects. I want to recapture that magic and multiply it by ten.
Lastly, while I do hope you make something fabulous and display it in public, I ask that you please adhere to all laws in your area.
